PLEASE NOTE: Even though this entire review is geared more to our hunter and camper visitors (and we are all for hunting and the ownership of firearms), we are not going to get into the graphic details about cutting meat or what kind of meat that we are using. This is in regards to respecting the sensitivity of our other visitors. We will check and report any issues with the blade during the cutting process. Thank You for understanding.

In July 2004, The Schrade name was purchased by Taylor Brands LLC, who manufacture Schrade, Old Timer, Imperial, Uncle Henry and Smith & Wesson knives |
The first thing we checked on this is the black sheath that comes with the knife. Stitching looks very good, as well as the belt loop. We took the knife in and out many times, and the knife still stays nice and snug in the sheath.
Next, we took a look at the blade and the edge.. very nicely polished blade and "razor sharp" edge on the main blade as well as the gut hook. The knife has a very thick spine. The metal, that the blade is made out of is 7Cr17 stainless steel which is equal to 440A stainless steel. The main knife and gut hook cuts thru meat flawlessly. We also tested cutting some nylon rope using the gut hook... works very well.
The handle is my most favorite part of the whole knife, it is SO comfortable.. I could hold the knife for hours. It almost feels, between rubber and a gel material.. that is the best way I can desribe it. The end part of the handle has a nice laynard hole. There is also gimping on the top of the knife, near the hilt on a thumb rest.
The one thing that we see towards the hilt, is where the knife blade goes into the handle. Is it is very soft.. so soft you can move the material the handle is made out of. Not a major consern, but we would like to see this not move as much. We feel this is a great knife for the money and not only for hunters, but also for collectors. - Tom
Here is our review on Schrade Old Timer (Taylor Brands) , 241OT Camper Combo Kit:
Even though this is a combo item and comes in one package, on this review we focusing just on the Gut Hook Knife, please see our upcoming Axe / Hatchet in regards to this hatchet, in the picture above.
First, we start at the combo sheath.. all of the stitching is good. Velcro flaps and straps seem durable. Main knife blade is a matte gray. We thought the blade may be carbon, but from our research it is 7Cr17 stainless steel which is equal to 440A stainless steel. The main blade and gut hook are very sharp. The rubber green handle has nice grips and will not slip in your hand. The is also a laynard hold in the back on the knife.
The main blade cuts meat very well, the gut hook part of the blade also does well. We tried cutting some nylon rope and we did slice thru it ok.
This is a very nice tool combo to have. We have also noticed some customer reviews around certain web sites that are saying for the money, this combo pack is awesome and holds up well when working in the woods...we agree 100%.
Remember, please see our upcoming Axe / Hatchet review, on the hatchet from this combo, the link will be posted from our main page. -Tom

Browning Arms Company is a maker of
firearms, bows and fishing gear. Founded
in Ogden, Utah it offers a wide variety of
firearms, including knives, shotguns, rifles,
pistols, rimfire firearms, and sport bows.
We checked out the nylon sheath that came with this knife. It has the Browning logo and name on the front and the whole sheath is very heavy duty. The stiching of the nylon is very well done, and the sheath is hard.. this is good for over all durability.
The blade is stainless steel 440A, we looked at both blades at the pivot points. The both have either nylon or metal discs which is great to see. Sometimes companies skip this important part in manufacturing which makes the knife fail a short time later.. NOT the case with this knife. Both the drop point blade and the gut hook blade are razor sharp. There is a regular liner lock on top for the drop point blade and a side button lock for the gut hook blade. Both liner locks are well made. We also tested the locks by using "the spine test" where we whack the top of the knife blades against our hand and leg to see if the blade colapses and bypasses the safety of the liner lock. Both blades are solid, no issues with either locks. The handle is a black aluminum, not plastic. This adds a nice weight to the knife.
We were very happy to see that even though the gut hook blade is shorter than say.. a fixed blade.. it cut the meat perfectly. Both blades are VERY sharp!
As a personal preference.. we would like to have a laynard hole in the end of the knife, just to be able to put some paracord thru it. Again, not really an issue.. just a personal view. Maybe the company will do that on their next folding knife. We even would like this knife for every day carrying. This knife has the kind of portablity that you don't mind. You could wear this knife out and about in it's sheath, as it is still not as big as a fixed blade. -Tom

Our review on the Sheffield Drop Point Gut Hook Kenai Curve - Item: 12971
Note: The company sells this knife on there Amazon Store Front - Click Here - Tool-Mania
First, we checked out the nylon sheath. The sheath is light weight, but very solid. Stitch of the fabric is good, no issues. We are able to take out and then re-insert the knife back in to the sheath without any issues.
Next, we checked the blade, the metal of the blade is 420HC stainless steel. The metal is softer than 440A stainless steel, but because there is less carbon in the metal. However, this sort of steel is very rust resistant because of the lack of carbon. The metal is better to use in harsh eviroments like working near the ocean or in the woods. The main part in the blade is very sharp and the blade it curves more so upwards on the very end of the blade. The gut hook is ok as well. The spine on the knife is thick. There is also gimping on the top of the knife blade. The handle has a lot of grips on it and is easy to hold on to. There is also a laynard hole to put some paracord thru.
We were able to cut some meat very well. There is not a lot of tool companies out there that could pull off a knife such as this for the over all price.
