NOTE: Clicking on the picture above, will bring you to PowerTek's Amazon.com page to purchase the Fire Talon Multi Tool.
Our own pictures, will not do this tool any justice that it deserves; we are mainly focusing our attention to the details of the tool. We hope that our review below will show all of our great visitors how AWESOME this tool really is:
The Fire Talon multi tool by PowerTek goes “way beyond” the commercial role to “tactical \ operational use”! Without any doubt, this unit is equal or even “better” than other well known products in the “100+ USD” range! Here is why..
The Breakdown -
The Handle:
-
The units have handles that are slightly curve and one is thinner than the other like the handle shape that you would find one shears or industrial scissors.
-
There is also “square like” rubber or silicone blocks recessed in the handle that provides awesome non-slip griping power. The entire unit is also black in color.
-
One side of the handle, there is a recessed button that acts as a three way switch. The switch actives the “light” (LED) in the “back” of the handle where the knife and majority of tools open to full position. Another press of the button turns of the first light and turn on the second light on the “front” of the handle. This is where the pliers open to full position. This shows the awesome design and ingenuity of the designer.
-
On the side of the handle, there is a small tray that swinging outs and locks back into place. That tray contains two 3 Volt(3V), CR1616 lithium batteries. These medium sized button cell batteries are easily found, even on Amazon.com and local stores. Lithium batteries last “5 times” longer in operation use than alkaline batteries, and have a storage shelf life up to 10 years. So buy some extras, and store them away.
-
When both handles open, the “snap” into place, locked solid.
-
There are two torx or star blots on the top sides of the handles and bottom. We think that they are T10 in size. If you have a Torx\Star driver set you should be able to tighten them “if needed”, currently they are all fine with this unit, and we have and no adjustments are needed. Like the saying goes: “if it’s not broke.. don’t fix it”.
The Tools:
-
The first tool that we noticed is the knife. This knife is about 3 inches and is a modified
sheepsfoot \ drop point with a very thick spine. It has a partial serrated blade which is very useful if you are cutting thick rope or even a small piece of wood. We believe that the steel is 3RC13 / 420B, which means that the knife is easier to sharpen and is more corrosion resistant because of the lower carbon of the steel. The knife also has a great liner lock that is "rock solid" and we are able to open one handed with a thumb swipe as is. One tip that we have, is that the knife does not have any thumb studs for opening the knife, rather.. it has a wide “hole”. This was probably intended to keep the blade from opening when retracting from the sheath. If you still want a thumb stud on the blade, you can use a small “zip tie” thru the hole opening of the blade, and then cut the zip tie cleanly off. This will give you a thumb stud on the side of the hole on the blade, but our findings again that we are able to “easily” open the blade with one hand...
...a great knife in its own right.
-
On the “back” of the handle, the tools that open up are: philips head screwdriver, small standard screw driver, large standard screw driver, and scissors that has a different “leaf spring” type of mechanism that is way more secure than other multi tool scissors that we have seen.
-
On the other side of the handle, there is a can opener and a bottle opener on the same tool. There also seems to be a smaller standard screwdriver on the "tip" of the tool as well.
-
Once again, we see the genus of design that the engineer has implemented on the tools. Each tool has a small smooth appendage on the top that allow a person to be able to open the tools easier. The small standard screwdriver and Philips head screwdriver actually has a small “bar” under them. When you press a small lever it manually raises both those tools to half height, again, outstanding.
-
The pliers have a better hardness then others out in the market, and grip is really great. The wire cutters inside the pliers are wicked sharp!
-
Another thing to add about the tools is they also snap into place, there are no physical locks, but the way they are designed, they won’t close if they get lightly tapped accidentally in operation.
-
The tools are also made and machined in Switzerland. The tool itself is put together in China.
The Sheath:
-
The sheath looks like it is made from strong nylon; the belt loop has nice stitching on it and seems to us to be very solid. It is also designed smaller on the bottom to give the tool a nice snug fit. If the tool seems to fit only one way when you first get it, it doesn’t.. Just push the unit down a bit, it fits using either end down into the sheath first.
Conclusion:
-
Again this tool is “way beyond” commercial specs, and if there was any type of emergency that we were reacting to, this multi tool would be our number one choice to have on hand. If we had cash in hand to buy say, “five” $100 USD multi tools for critical use, we would buy multiples of this unit as the price point is so low. We know, that is saying a lot.. But that’s how we honestly feel, that this unit is “that good". We did tests of this unit out in the field and have taken equipment a part, cut thru material including wire and metal with the pliers, and have used the LED simply as a flash light which can light up entire rooms, simply perfect!
-
I’m not trying to embarrass the designer of this tool but after some research, I now know the designer's awesome engineering background, and it is so apparent in the tools layout and design over all. The designer does not know, but we share certain similarities in past job fields and I am very happy that we were able to review this great multi tool to you our great visitors.
-
Power Tek also has an awesome 51 LED UV ULTRAVIOLET SCORPION FLASHLIGHT and also a FLASH LED SUPER BRIGHT HEAD LAMP. Hopefully we will be able to review either of these units next year. Both of these units seem to have the same great thought put into them by the designer and his engineer expertise shows once again.
