What Real Self-defense Is All About
Real self-defense is first of all about avoiding being assaulted or even bothered, about seeing trouble well ahead and not walking into an ambush, about discouraging an attack by your demeanor, and only when all else fails is it about neutralizing an attack that could not be prevented.
The “neutralizing” ought to be done in a manner that minimizes the chance of the defender being victimized by the law. What I mean is that any harm to the attacker, no matter how grave, must be the direct consequence of a purely defensive action.
Take this hint: The best defenses look like accidents and then can be explained as accidents too. . . . And for sure they have to be explainable, in a court of law, as actions meant solely to protect the defender and not purposefully harm the assailant. With a little practice and a cool head, anyone can turn an attack into a bad accident for the attacker.
Just as we review knives and other tools, we start at the handle. The handle is wider then other umbrella's and that is a good thing. In self defense applications such in Aikido, Hapkido and Ju-Jitsu the hook handle can wrap around legs, arms or even the neck of an attacker. Not 100% sure, but the handle seems to be made out of either nylon and/or rubber... thats the way it feels. It is very easy to hold, but also provides a nice grip as well. The button to release the top of the umbrella is by the handle as well, flush with the surface.
Next, we take a look at the construction of the umbrella itself. On the model which is the standard model, the umbrella shaft is made from a heavy duty fiberglass as well as the tines that goes thru the top of the umbrella's fabric. When the umbrella is closed, all of the fiberglass parts act as one unit when striking. I have struck a tree as hard as I could, fence posts, stabbed the ground and pavement with no damage what so ever. I also "lightly" dropped the umbrella on top my forearm, and the shock from the impact was "very" unpleasant, I was not expecting that sort of impact from a very light drop. That shock, totally convinced me that this is a great umbrella and self defense tool. Also to note the metal "tip" at the end is very nice and solid as well. It does handle nicely in the rain, I'm certain that the wind would not affect it.
I've been practicing cetain types of martial arts for about 20 years, and I really recommend this. If you walk alot, travel, ect... carrying this gives you way more of an advanage then other smaller self defense tools as this looks like a common every day object. Even if you took every section of fabric off of the umbrella, you still have the sturdy frame for blocking and striking.. very awesome! In the addition to locks and holds of Aikido, Hapkido and Ju-Jitsu, martial arts that practices with swords such as TaiJiquan (Tai Chi Chuan), Iaijutsu, Kenjutsu could easily implement this umbrella for self defense. Also stick fighting arts of Kali, Eskrima and Arnis would also be able to deploy such a self defense tool as this.
As a side note, my vistors and companies that has products that we review both know, that my team and I have very high ethics. If a product is not what it claims to be, we would say so as we "do not" make any profits at all from this site. I have also looked as Mr. Thomas Kurz self-defense tips and teachings. I feel that Mr. Thomas Kurz is very knowledgeable and also "thinks" about self-defense techniques as well as the law. While others in martial arts may have huge ego's and lack self control, I do not see that at all in regards to Mr. Thomas Kurz, and that should be noted.
